Why People Drive Without Buying Car Insurance

Insurance Blog

Car insurance is one of the most useful and common insurance coverage in the country, but some people still don't have it. Here are some of the excuses people use to avoid buying auto insurance:

They Think Car Insurance Is Expensive

Car insurance might be expensive, but that shouldn't stop you from buying coverage. First, there are tons of things you can do to reduce your coverage rates; here are just a few of them:

  • Ask for all the possible discounts; you don't know how many of them you qualify for
  • Increase your deductible
  • Keep a clean driving history
  • Maintain a good driving record, among others.

Secondly, buying all available coverage will definitely see you paying higher rates. You can greatly reduce your rates by only buying the coverage you need. For example, you can forgo comprehensive cover if you drive an old car that isn't worth much. Thirdly, even if your financial situation does indeed make car insurance expensive for you, the alternative of going without coverage is even worse. For example, if you don't have coverage, you will have to:

  • Take care of your medical bills on your own if you are hurt in an accident
  • Replace the car on your own if it is written off or stolen
  • Use your own money to pay for damages if you are sued for causing an accident
  • Pay a monetary fine for driving without coverage if you are caught

In short, the cost of driving without coverage is way more expensive than any amount you may pay for insurance coverage.

They Don't Drive That Much

Another reason some people don't buy auto coverage is that they believe they don't drive enough to warrant the purchase of insurance. The danger of this kind of reasoning is that there is no amount of driving that triggers the need for auto insurance coverage. You need to be covered even if you drive once per month or less than that. For one, you can be involved in an accident even if you drive once per year. Secondly, auto insurance covers other risks that are not associated with driving (such as theft or vandalism). Thirdly, the law requires every driver to have valid liability coverage every time they operate car insurance coverage.

They Don't Own Cars

This is the third excuse others use to avoid buying auto insurance. This argument doesn't hold any water because car insurance isn't just for those who own cars; it is also useful for those who don't own cars but drive or plan to drive in the near future. For example, if you drive rental cars, borrow friend's cars or use ride sharing programs, you may need auto insurance coverage because the coverage for those cars may not extend to you, may be nonexistent or may be inadequate for your situation. The only situation in which you may not need coverage is if you don't drive, don't own a car and neither expects to drive or own a car in the future.
