Defense Base Act Insurance: What It Is And How It Works

Insurance Blog

Defense Base Act (DBA) insurance is a program in the United States Department of Labor for employees of defense bases overseas. It is an extension of the country's Worker's Compensation program. Any worker that is injured while doing their job will receive treatment and monetary compensation if necessary.

Which type of employees can receive DBA insurance?

In order to receive the Defense Base Act insurance, you must be employed at certain places. Some of the jobs that cover DBA insurance are:

  • Construction or service contractors for United States government agencies connected to war activities

  • Contractors providing military equipment and services for allies of the country

  • Contractors working on military bases or any land overseas that is being utilized by the country for the military

  • Contractors providing services to the Armed Services overseas

  • Any subcontractors that are part of any work with any of the previous contracts listed above

If you are contracted by an agency and stationed overseas, chances are you qualify for DBA insurance.

How does the insurance work?

If you get injured in the line of duty, the first thing you need to do is immediately seek medical attention. Once you have done that, you need to contact your supervisor. Give them the details of the injury. They will need to fill out the proper forms for the insurance claim. After the form is filled out, it's your responsibility to send the claim to Worker's Compensation. If you do not send the claim within a year, it will not be valid. Once the claim is filed, there is a waiting period of three days before you receive payment.

It is the program's responsibility to pay you if you are unable to work due to the injuries you received. The amount you receive is based on your wages for the year prior to your injury. The payments are typically sent bi-weekly. When you are able to work again, the payments stop. If your injuries are so severe you cannot return to work, you may be considered disabled and receive permanent benefits.

Conclusion

Defense Base Act Insurance is extremely important to workers based overseas. If you qualify, you need to know all you can about it in order to utilize it if you become injured while working. You can discuss it with your employer if you have any concerns or questions regarding DBA insurance. Make sure you stay up to date on any changes in the program as well.
