Are you in need of a new homeowners insurance policy? Here is what you should know before you decide what type of coverage to get:
Here's What Usually Can Be Covered
Homeowners insurance usually covers any damage done to your home and other buildings on your property due to storms or fires. The belongings inside your home, such as furniture, artwork, and jewelry can also be covered in case of theft or some type of damage. Liability coverage is typically offered as well, which would cover medical expenses for injuries and damage to your property in the event of an accident.
If your belongings are damaged due to an accident or you are injured due to negligence of some kind, your homeowners insurance may provide you with funds to replace your belongings or pay for your medical expenses. Some homeowners insurance policies will even cover valuable coins, silver and gold, and cash that is destroyed while being stored inside your home.
Here's What Usually Cannot Be Covered
Unfortunately, most homeowners insurance policies do not offer coverage of any kind when property is damaged due to an earthquake, a hurricane, or a lava flow. Depending on the type of coverage you decide to invest in, some of the items inside your home may not be worth covering, so what will not be covered will mostly be your decision.
While the chance of war happening on or around your property is slim, it is important to note that damage done due to wartime actions is not typically covered in a homeowners insurance policy.
Here's How to Know What Kind of Coverage to Get
You can pick and choose what is and isn't going to be covered by your homeowners insurance policy for the most part. For example, if you own a boat but rarely use it, you may choose not to include it in your coverage to save a little money each month. The same thing goes for indoor belongings like televisions, computers, and furniture. You can even choose to only cover your structures and to exclude all your belongings if you want to.
To determine what kind of coverage you should get, make a list of any valuable belongings you would like to have covered along with your structures and then figure out the monetary value of each item. Then, compare the value to the cost of coverage for each item and decide whether the monthly payments you will be making for coverage are worth it. If you will pay more for coverage within a few months than the value of the item you are covering, the coverage may not be worth it.
